Q1. Why is the Sears Kenmore dehumidifier being recalled? A . The dehumidifiers can overheat, smoke, melt and catch on fire, posing a fire and burn hazards to consumers. We are taking this action as part of our continued commitment to product safety and to providing the highest quality and service to our customers. [ TOP ] Q2. Have there been any reported injuries? A . Sears has received 107 reports of incidents, many causing significant property damage, and 3 reports of smoke inhalation injuries. [ TOP ] Q3. Can I continue to use my Sears Kenmore dehumidifier? A . No. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product, and disconnect the dehumidifier from the electrical power outlet. [ TOP ] Q4. How can I tell if my dehumidifier is affected by the recall? A . The products affected by this recall only include certain Sears Kenmore brand model numbers. The product's model number can be found in the center of the unit once the water bucket has been removed. See Below. To determine if your product is being recalled, enter the model number at www.kenmoredehumidifierrecall.com, or call 1-855-400-4641 (toll-free). The company, along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and LG Electronics, the manufacturer of the product, is taking the following steps as part of this voluntary recall: Consumers will receive a Sears gift card for either $75, $80, $90 or $100, which may be used at any Sears or Kmart store (and at Sears.com or Kmart.com). The gift card amount will depend on the capacity and year of the dehumidifier. In lieu of a gift card, consumers may request a check for the refund amount. All consumers with recalled units will also receive a $25 coupon that may be used at Sears Department Stores or Sears.com toward the purchase of a new Kenmore dehumidifier. [ TOP ] Q6. How can I participate in the recall? A . Customers can call the toll-free number or access the website below for additional information regarding the recall. Consumers will receive the remedy they elect within 10 business days after the manufacturer, LG Electronics, receives the cord from their recalled product, which can be easily removed (after it is unplugged) with a pair of household scissors, and the labels with the model and serial numbers, which can be easily pulled off of the product (use a hair dryer to help loosen the label, if necessary). Detailed information will be provided by customer representatives through the toll-free number (1-855-400-4641 toll free for USA between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. CT Saturday) and/or through this website. [ TOP ] Q7. I no longer have the receipt for the product. Can I still participate in the recall? A . Yes. You can participate by registering on this website and by sending in the electrical cord and model/serial number labels to LG Electronics. Once you register, you will be able to print a prepaid shipping label to send the necessary electrical cord and product labels. No receipt for the product is necessary. [ TOP ] Q8. Can I take the unit back to the store where I purchased it? A . No, retailers will not accept the units back nor will they provide the recall remedy. For instructions regarding participating in the recall, please see Q6. [ TOP ] Q9. How can I determine the amount of remedy? A . Click on the "Check to See if Your Dehumidifier is Affected" button, below, and follow the instructions. If your dehumidifier is being recalled, the system will tell you about your remedy options, based on the capacity and year of manufacture of your dehumidifier. [ TOP ] Q10. How do I dispose of the product once I have removed the cord and labels? A . Please arrange for disposal of your recalled dehumidifier by contacting your local waste removal vendor (do not return unit to store). Please also confirm that the vendor will dispose of the dehumidifier in an environmentally responsible manner, consistent with the Environmental Protection Agency's guidelines and recommendations for proper disposal of appliances, which can be found at http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/608/disposal/household.html, or http://earth911.com/. You may also contact your local Department of Public Works or Solid Waste Department for information on proper disposal and disposal locations.
